The topic for this meeting on Monday 17th August, 6-8pm will be “Wireshark: Viewing your application from the network”. Our presenter will be Martin Visser from HP. The meeting will be in the Computer Science Tea Room 3.224.

Pizza will be served from 6-6.30pm. It would be very helpful if you could RSVP to Andrew Zahra by Friday 14th August so we can get the catering right.

Martin will present a tutorial specifically focused on using Wireshark, an open-source packet sniffer or network analyser. The presentation will aim to help application developers use Wireshark to assist them in understanding how their application impacts on the network and is impacted by  the network and associated resources. Wireshark can provide both an understand of the protocol flow, being able to see and interpret the conversation, but also assist in characterizing performance parameters that are pertinent to the application users experience. The aim is helping application developers make apps that use networks work better.

Martin Visser is a Network and Security Consultant by day, working for HP since 1997. Previously he worked at the Port Kembla Steelworks, beginning life as an Electrical Engineer, but very quickly getting involved in PLC programming, writing FORTRAN and C stuff for various production control and communication devices. Today, Martin architects and designs network infrastructure solutions for the largest of enterprises. He also often is involved in analyzing specific performance issues on WAN networks. While sometimes this results in applying various solutions to the network infrastructure (such as traffic shaping and quality of service), I also often identify issues that are more attributable to the application design and how it makes use of the network.
